VOLUNTEERS

  • VRC volunteers must be 18 years or older, or if below the age of 18 may volunteer with adult supervision and prior approval by the VRC (i.e., "Week of Hope," Girl Scouts, etc.).
  • VRC volunteers cannot be in crisis due to domestic, sexual, stalking, family violence, or some other critical event.  Prospective volunteers must be removed from a personal crisis situation for at least one year before applying to volunteer.  We believe that when in crisis the priority for each individual should be to heal - with the goal of stabilization and empowerment.
  • Prospective volunteers must complete an application form, pass criminal and other background checks, and attend an interview prior to the training program.
  • All volunteers working with clients and families by providing crisis intervention, counseling, advocacy, play- and art-therapy, etc., must attend the VRC Core Training (50 hours), which provides a knowledge in working with clients on the issues of domestic, sexual, stalking, family violence, and child abuse. These volunteers need to complete an additional 15 hours of training annually with the VRC to continue to volunteer for our agency.
  • One-time and special project volunteers do not have to complete the 50-hour VRC Core Training, but must complete the VRC Volunteer Application and sign and agree to the VRC "Confidentiality Promise."
  • All volunteers are expected to sign and commit to the VRC "Confidentiality Promise" which is a life-time promise not to disclose confidential and/or private information on the agency, victims, clients, families, locations, etc.

The New York State Rape Crisis, and Domestic Violence training certification (VRC Core Training) does not extend outside volunteering or working with the VRC.  Volunteers cannot extend this certification at the end of their volunteer work with the VRC.
